History
A slot machine
The first one arm bandit was invented by Charles Fey of San Francisco, California, USA, who devised a very simple automatic mechanism. [1] Many say Fey invented the machine in 1887, though some believe it can there be conceived 1895. [2] Due to the large number of possible winners with the original game of poker cards, it was practically impossible to have a machine capable of automatic payment for all possible winning combinations. Charles Fey devised a machine with three spinning wheels containing a total of five symbols – horseshoes, diamonds, spades, hearts and a Liberty Bell, which also gave the name to the machine. By replacing ten cards with five symbols and using three wheels instead of five drums, the complexity of reading a win was considerably reduced, allowing Fey to devise a mechanism for automatic payment. Three bells in line produced the most profit, ten nickels.
